Character Background
• History: Here!
• Core Relationships:
Noise/Zwei Baskerville — As her split personality, Echo and Noise are as close as you can possibly get. Echo spent a lot of time as the dominant personality to protect Noise as her mind deteriorated, holding on to the lost pieces of herself that she and all the past Echoes had collected. However, Noise never really wanted her there, and their relationship for much of Echo's existence was antagonistic. Noise was very abusive to Echo, telling her she was in the way, unneeded, and constantly reminding her that she was a disposable existence and would vanish one day just like all the Echoes before her. Eventually, Noise also found ways to hurt or threaten Oz to emotionally abuse Echo as well. However, Echo was still intended to be her guardian, and from her unique perspective she realized Noise was terrified after the process of losing herself and only knew how to hurt people. Echo ended up saving her from having her heart completely shatter in the end not just because she was designed to be Noise's shield, but because Echo wanted to do so.
Duldee — Noise's Chain, Duldee, created Echo to prevent Noise from fully losing her heart. As the last Duldum in a long line, she was expected to follow the pull of Duldee's strings like a good puppet. It designed her to only have whatever feelings and wants that were necessary to the function she was created for. However, as Echo began to see herself as an individual and allowed herself to experience more emotions, she found herself beginning to defy Duldee's will. When Echo discovered it was trying to take over Noise's body, she and the Chain fully turned against each other. Echo managed to strike Duldee down in the end and was able to exist without the Chain she was supposed to depend on due to her own will, albeit briefly because that final battle drained Noise's body and she died.
Vincent Nightray — Apart from existing to keep Noise from completely breaking, Echo spent her time as Vincent's personal servant. Her duties included not just basic day-to-day things, but also running surveillance and assisting him in his shadier plots. Fully knowing what she was, he treated her about as well as her Contractor did. Vincent was known to beat her for not following orders or just because he was in a bad mood. He would also make her sit on his knee and caress her. Echo, in turn, found him very annoying. She didn't understand his harassment, nor was she pleased with his messy and destructive ways. Since she thought she was only a disposable existence, however, she felt as though she could not object to any of it. Therefore, many people saw Echo as a doll who just followed his orders without question. Echo began showing signs of defying him, such as informing Gilbert of Break's whereabouts when Vincent wanted to leave him to die. In the end, she saved Vincent from being killed by Duldee, but she was more concerned about protecting Noise at that point.
Oz Vessalius — Finally, a GOOD relationship! At first Echo thought Oz was a nuisance, but even after their first meeting he made a lasting impression on her. Oz is directly responsible for Echo seeing herself as an actual existence with emotions and wants. It may sound like a gag-worthy line out of a crappy romcom, but Echo literally did not know what happiness was until she spent time with him. Their time at the St. Bridget's Day Festival was particularly important to her growth, and even though she knew he had no idea what he was doing when he gave her the feather, it was still really meaningful to her. Understandably, Oz became very dear to Echo even if she never fully comprehended why that was. She did her best to comfort him in his lowest moment and was devastated when he could have hated her for his uncle's death. As annoyed as she was by his insistence on calling her by a nickname, hearing him use that was what made her start feeling like an individual and in the end it gave her the strength to finally rebel against Duldee entirely as her own, separate existence. She also made sure to thank him for as much as she could while she was dying, and him getting her name right for once was enough to make her smile for the first time. And like a second later she died. Good times!
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences:
One of the first positive things we see about Echo is her loyalty. During her first appearance, she's fulfilling orders she received from her master, Vincent. Even after she began emerging as an individual, she would still follow any direct orders he gave her. Then, at the end of her story, Echo was willing to sacrifice everything just to protect Noise. While it was technically her original job, Echo also wanted to keep Noise safe of her own volition and went so far as to destroy the Chain that created her.
She even goes a bit beyond loyalty by being a supportive person. She is very willing to help people even if she is not obligated to do so. Echo fought to protect Ada from Noise even though she had to force herself into control of their body. She also warned Ada to get away, because she knew Noise would come back out soon and go back to trying to kill her. She will also try to help people outside of battle, even if her success rate in that field isn't perfect. After Oz was revealed to be a dangerous Chain in Jack's body, lost the two people closest to him, and was set to be executed, Echo went to see him and was very concerned that he was not okay. She failed at telling him a joke, and tried to tell him comforting things only to have him reveal some of the darker plot points. Finally she just hugged him.
Echo is also very observant to her own advantage. In spite of her beginnings as a blank doll, she has always had a thirst to know and understand things, which is why she is often seen people watching in her free time and why she keeps her diary. When Oz peeks inside it at the St. Bridget's Day festival, it's really just a log of anything interesting she experienced. Knowing her time is limited, she also feels it's important to preserve these things that she learned. This desire could also be linked to her role as Noise's spilt-personality. She carried the lost memories and pieces of Noise's personality that she and many past Echoes had collected so the other girl would never forget.
Her ability to learn is aided by her willingness to take in new ideas. Echo had thought that Oz had no business interfering with her orders to take Philippe hostage, but when he told her that caring about someone also makes it your business, she changed her tune and allowed him to tag along. Accepting that idea was also why she stopped Vincent from destroying the antidote that Sharon needed even though he was ready to beat her for not letting him do what he wanted. Despite no one talking to her about it directly, she also used all of her new feelings and experiences to finally accept her sense of self and truly become an individual in the end.
(2+) Negative Experiences:
Due to being a disposable personality expected to be completely subservient, Echo has very low self-worth. Even though Vincent abuses and sexually harasses her, and by her own account tortures and humiliates her, she does not feel like she's worth enough to object to any of it. She would only fight Noise from coming out when she was specifically ordered to do so, otherwise she would let the other girl take control quite easily since it was Noise's body in the first place so Echo didn't have the right to it. Some of that has improved by the end of the series, but is too entrenched to be completely out of her personality.
Also due to the above, Echo tends to repress her emotions to the point that many people believed she didn't even have them. She usually speaks very monotonously, which doesn't help that impression. While she did have a few feelings during her earliest appearance, mostly annoyance and anger, she rarely let them show even slightly. When Oz comments on how much she must like Vincent to have served him her whole life, Echo tries to hide her dislike. When given permission to speak freely, however, she has plenty of complaints she was just never able to vent because she wouldn't show people how she felt. This repression has also made it difficult for her to understand her newer emotions that her connection with Oz sparked, causing them to surface as the feelings she was more used to. Her response to receiving the feather from Oz at the St. Bridget's Day festival after asking him if he knew what that signified was to blush, but also frown and walk off without another word.
Her emotional inexperience also makes her far too objective at times. As much as she truly loved seeing the fireworks at the St. Bridget's Day festival, she could only describe her enjoyment by explaining how fireworks function scientifically. Later, when Alice's treatment of Oz is annoying her and Alice asks why she cares, she seems to truly believe her explanation that it was because Oz once saved the life of Vincent's beloved brother. As with everything else in this section, there was some improvement on this before she died, but certainly not enough for it to no longer be part of her.
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers: Echo's entire existence was the extension of a Chain's powers, so all of her abilities stem from the body she was placed in. She has superhuman physical stamina and endurance. This not only includes being able to run at high speed for long amounts of time, jumping impressively high, and the ability to do gymnastic-like battle moves, but also means she can be perfectly still and quiet for hours at a time and maintain her focus. Her body also heals very quickly, including from very serious wounds. On that note, most wounds that would usually prove fatal would, at worst, incapacitate her for a time.
• Blood Type: Coldblood
• Omen: Bear cub
• Blessed Day: May 30th, which I have arbitrarily decided is St. Bridget's Day.
• Patron Pthumerian: Bausphomette
• Blood Power Manifestation: Considering Echo won't get much change from the general powers Sleepers have, she does have a few abilities from her Coldblood. Echo will be able to utilize ice and electricity. Ice will come the most easily to her, and initially she'll be able to create ice walls of increasing size and volume as she gets used to her power. They can be used as shields, high ground, etc. She will also relatively quickly be able to infuse her swords with ice. Much later, she'll be able to turn those ice walls into projectile spires that either come up from the ground or drop from the air. As for electricity, it will be much harder for her to control, but it will manifest as an aura (from a basic static feeling to lightning bolts around her) and become another element for her swords. She may accidentally activate it when she's in a bad mood while she's still learning her powers.
